The ferry port of Hachijojima is on the island of the same name in the Izu group, which is administratively part of Tokyo. From here you can reach Mikurajima, Miyakejima and Tokyo. Together the services add up to as many as 6 departures a day. Crossings take between 2.75 and 10.25 hours. The port is served by Tokai Kisen, whose ship runs once a day between Takeshiba Pier in Tokyo and Hachijojima.
Getting there and the terminal
Hachijojima has two harbours, Sokodo and Yaene, and which of them the ship uses is only settled on the day of travel. Tokai Kisen decides according to the swell and the wind direction, because they determine where the ship can tie up at all. Do not count on the outward and return legs using the same harbour either, as the operator sets that afresh for each direction. This is more than a formality: the right bus, the taxi ride and any pick-up arranged with your accommodation all depend on which harbour is used. So ask the operator on the day of departure which quay applies.
Check-in
Tokai Kisen requires check-in to be completed at least 15 minutes before the ship casts off. Turn up later and you risk losing your booking. During the holiday season and around the long public holiday weeks the desks are busy, so allow considerably more time then.
