Japan is an island nation with one of the best-developed ferry networks in the world.

The directory lists 64 ferry ports and 194 ferry routes for Japan. Most connections run through Kagoshima, Tokyo and Naha. From these ports, ferries sail to South Korea. Ferries to Akita

Akita is a port on the north-west coast of Honshu on the Sea of Japan. Shin Nihonkai Ferry links the city with Niigata, about 7 hours away, and with Tsuruga and Tomakomai on Hokkaido on multi-day routes.

Ferries to Anbo

Anbo is one of the two main ports on Yakushima. Tane Yaku Jetfoil runs high-speed ferries to Kagoshima, and the crossing takes about 2.5 hours. Trips to the Jomonsugi cedar start from here.

Ferries to Aomori

Tsugarukaikyo Ferry links Aomori at the northern end of Honshu with Hakodate and Muroran on Hokkaido. Passengers are handled at the operator's own terminal at the ferry pier, around ten minutes by taxi from JR Aomori station.

Ferries to Atami

Atami is a popular hot-spring resort on the Izu peninsula in Japan. Ferries run to the nearby island of Hatsushima (30 minutes, about 10 times a day) and to Izu Ōshima. The port is about 15 minutes by bus from the railway station.

Ferries to Beppu

Beppu is a famous onsen spa town on Kyushu, Japan. Uwajima-Unyu Ferries takes you from here to Yawatahama on Shikoku, and the crossing takes around 2.75 hours.

Ferries to Hachijojima

Hachijojima is a subtropical island in the Izu group, 287 km south of Tokyo. Tokai Kisen night ferries from Tokyo via Miyakejima take about 10 hours. The island also has an airport with ANA flights.

Ferries to Hakata

Hakata is Fukuoka's main port, with services to the islands of Iki and Tsushima and to the Goto archipelago. Ferries leave from the domestic passenger terminal (Hakata Pier). The port handles around 1.16 million passengers a year.

Kametoku is the main port of Tokunoshima. Marue Ferry links it daily, alternating between Kagoshima (15 hrs) and Naha. Departures are usually in the evening, arrivals in the morning.

Naha (Tomari Port) is the ferry port of the Okinawan capital. Ferries run to the Kerama Islands (Zamami, Tokashiki) in 35-70 minutes and to more distant islands such as Kumejima and Tonaki.

Naoetsu is a port in Jōetsu, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Sado Kisen runs seasonal ferries from April to November to Ogi on the island of Sado, taking about 2 hours 40 minutes, twice a day. There are no sailings in winter.

Naze is the main port of Amami Oshima. Marue Ferry (A-Line) links it with Kagoshima (10-11 hrs) and Naha on Okinawa. The ferries run every other day, usually leaving around 20:00.

Niijima is a volcanic island in the Izu group, about 163 km south of Tokyo. Tokai Kisen runs high-speed ferries (2.5-3.5 hours) and overnight ferries (8-9 hours) from Takeshiba Pier in Tokyo. The island is known for surfing and hot springs.

Ferries to Nishinoomote

Nishinoomote is the main town of the island of Tanegashima south of Kagoshima. The Toppy and Rocket hydrofoils link the port with Kagoshima on Kyushu and with Miyanoura and Anbo on Yakushima.

Oarai is a port east of Tokyo in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. MOL Sunflower runs overnight ferries to Tomakomai on Hokkaido every day. The crossing over the Pacific takes about 18-20 hours.

Ferries to Ogi

Ogi is a port in the south of the island of Sado. From April to November Sado Kisen runs ferries to Naoetsu on the mainland, and the crossing takes 2 hours 40 minutes. The route is not available in winter.

Ferries to Onomichi

The ferry port of Onomichi is in Japan. From here ferries run to Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prince Hotel and Kure. The port is served by Setonaikai Kisen.

Ferries to Osaka

Osaka Nanko is one of the largest ferry ports in Japan. Hankyu Ferry, Meimon Taiyo Ferry and Kansai Orange Ferry serve routes to Kitakyushu and Ehime on Shikoku, and Panstar Cruise sails to Busan.

Ferries to Otaru

Otaru is a historic port town west of Sapporo on Hokkaido, Japan. Shin Nihonkai Ferry runs overnight ferries to Niigata (16 hours) and Maizuru (21 hours). The terminal is 10 minutes by bus from Otaru-Chikko station.

Ferries to Ryotsu

Ryotsu is the main port of the island of Sado off the coast of Niigata, Japan. Sado Kisen runs jetfoils (65 minutes) and car ferries to Niigata. There are around 10 sailings a day.

Ferries to Setoda

The ferry port of Setoda is in Japan. From here ferries run to Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prince Hotel and Kure. The port is served by Setonaikai Kisen.

Ferries to Shikinejima

Shikinejima is a small island in the Izu group near Niijima. Tokai Kisen ferries link the island with Tokyo and the other Izu islands. A local ferry, the Nishiki, connects Shikinejima with Niijima in only 10 minutes.

Shimonoseki lies at the western tip of Honshu and is the ferry port for Korea. Pukwan Ferry runs overnight ferries to Busan (10h 45min). The terminal is only 5 minutes' walk from the station.

Ferries to Shinmoji

Shinmoji is the main ferry port of Kitakyushu. Hankyu Ferry links it daily with Kobe, 12.5 hours away, and with Izumiotsu, while Meimon Taiyo sails to Osaka. Shuttle buses run from Kokura station.

Ferries to Shodo Island

Shodoshima lies in the Seto Inland Sea between Honshu and Shikoku. Jumbo Ferry links the port of Sakate in the south-east of the island with Kobe and Takamatsu, and the crossings take between 1.25 and 3.25 hours.

Ferries to Takamatsu

Takamatsu is the capital of Kagawa Prefecture and the way in to the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. Jumbo Ferry links the port with Kobe and Shodo Island. Check-in is at the Takamatsu Higashi Ferry Terminal, around four kilometres from the JR station.

Ferries to Taketomi

Taketomi is a small island in the Yaeyama group, only 10 minutes by ferry from Ishigaki. Anei Kanko and Yaeyama Kanko run hourly ferries. The island is known for its traditional Ryukyu village.

Ferries to Tokushima

Tokushima is on Shikoku, Japan. Nankai Ferry links the city with Wakayama (about 2 hours 15 minutes). With 8 departures a day and a connection to the Nankai railway, this is a popular route from Osaka to Shikoku.

Ferries to Tokyo

Tokyo (Takeshiba) is the main ferry port for Japan's Izu and Ogasawara islands. Tokai Kisen runs night ferries and fast ferries to the Izu islands. The Ogasawara-maru sails weekly to Chichijima (24 hours).

Ferries to Tomakomai

Tomakomai is an important industrial port on Hokkaido, Japan. MOL Ferry links Tomakomai with Oarai near Tokyo, and the crossing takes around 17.5 hours.

Tomakomai Higashi is a ferry port in the south-west of Hokkaido, Japan. MOL Sunflower ferries link the port daily with Oarai (about 18 hours) and are an alternative to the Shinkansen for travel to Hokkaido.

Toyo is on the east coast of Ehime on Shikoku. Orange Ferry sails daily from Osaka-Nanko (departure 22:00, 8 hours, arrival 06:00). Modern ships with baths, a sauna and a restaurant. Shuttle to the JR station.

Ferries to Tsuruga

Tsuruga is a port on the Sea of Japan coast in Fukui Prefecture. Shin Nihonkai Ferry runs night ferries to Tomakomai (Hokkaido, about 20 hours) as well as services to Niigata and Akita.

Ferries to Usuki

Usuki is on the east coast of Kyushu in Oita prefecture. Orange Ferry and Uwajima Unyu link the port with Yawatahama on Shikoku 7 times a day, and the crossing takes about 2 hours 25 minutes.

Ferries to Wadomari

Wadomari is the main port of Okinoerabu. A-Line and Marue Ferry link the island with Kagoshima (18 hrs) and Naha via the other Amami Islands. There is one ferry a day in each direction.

Ferries to Wakayama

Wakayama is on the coast of the Kii peninsula. Nankai Ferry links the port with Tokushima on Shikoku 8 times a day, and the crossing takes about 2 hours 15 minutes. The ferry terminal has a direct connection to the railway station.

Ferries to Yawatahama

Yawatahama lies on the north-west coast of Shikoku. Uwajima Unyu and Orange Ferry link the port with Beppu (2h 50min) and Usuki (2h 25min) on Kyushu across the scenic Seto Inland Sea.

Yokosuka lies south of Yokohama on Tokyo Bay. Ferries run from Kurihama Port to Kanaya (40 min, every 30 to 50 min). Tokyo Kyusyu Ferry sails 6 times a week to Kitakyushu.
