The ferry port of Kiel is in Schleswig-Holstein on the Kiel Fjord, with the Oslo ferry berth in the Gaarden-Ost district. From here you can reach Gothenburg, Klaipėda and Oslo. Together the connections add up to as many as 6 departures a day; crossings take between 15.5 and 20.5 hours and are overnight sailings. The port is served by Color Line, DFDS and Stena Line.
Getting there and the terminal
Kiel has three separate terminals for the three lines, and they lie far apart. Stena Line departs from Schwedenkai on Kaistraße, around 800 metres, or about ten minutes' walk, from the main station. Color Line uses Norwegenkai on the eastern side of the Hörn, also reachable on foot in a few minutes from the station via the Hörnbrücke bridge. DFDS sails from Ostuferhafen on Grenzstraße, well outside the city centre and barely walkable: bus routes 11 and X60 run there to the Grenzstraße stop in Dietrichsdorf.
By car you arrive via the A215 from Hamburg or the A210 from Rendsburg. Color Line directs you via the Lübeck/B76/Ostuferhafen/Norwegenkai exit and, after around three kilometres on the B76, follows the signs for Norwegenkai/Fähren. For Schwedenkai, follow the signs from the A215 for Kiel Zentrum/Fähren and then Göteborg. At Norwegenkai, short- and long-stay spaces are booked in advance via Seehafen Kiel; at Schwedenkai the long-stay spaces are outside the port area.
Check-in
Deadlines vary considerably. Color Line is strictest: with a vehicle you must be at Norwegenkai at least 120 minutes before departure, without a vehicle 60 minutes. DFDS opens check-in for Klaipėda six hours before departure and closes it 90 minutes beforehand. Stena Line opens the desk at Schwedenkai daily at 2pm and closes it 30 minutes before departure.
