The ferry port of Mikurajima lies on the island of the same name in the Izu chain, which is administratively part of Tokyo. From here you can reach Hachijojima, Miyakejima and Tokyo. Together the services add up to as many as 6 departures a day. Crossings take between 45 minutes and 7.25 hours. The port is served by Tokai Kisen.
Getting there and the terminal
Mikurajima has exactly one berth, the harbour of Mikurajima, plus a helipad. The Tokai Kisen ships start in Tokyo at Takeshiba terminal and call at Miyakejima on the way south, with Hachijojima beyond. As an alternative to the ship, the Tokyo Ai-Land Shuttle helicopter service links the island with the airports of Miyakejima and Hachijojima.
Check-in
At Mikurajima, count firmly on conditional sailings. Tokai Kisen marks such departures specially and notes that the ship will sail but may not be able to berth because of conditions at sea and in the harbour. It then continues to the next island or returns to the port of departure. For the large ships the operating status is updated from 9am on the day of travel, and the final decision is taken around 5pm; for the fast boats it is settled as early as 6am. If you cannot get ashore at your destination and return on the same ship, the trip counts as cancelled and is refunded at the port of departure.
