The ferry port of Miyakejima lies on the volcanic island of the same name in the Izu chain, which is administratively part of Tokyo. From here you can reach Hachijojima, Mikurajima and Tokyo. Together the services add up to as many as 6 departures a day. Crossings take between 45 minutes and 6 hours. The port is served by Tokai Kisen.

Getting there and the terminal

Miyakejima has not one harbour but three: Sabigahama, also called Ako, plus Miike and Igaya. Which of them is used depends on the wind and the swell and is often settled only shortly before arrival. The Tokyo authorities therefore advise expressly that you check the port of call beforehand. For you that means arranging a pick-up or a hire car only once the harbour is known, because the three berths lie on different sides of the island.

From Tokyo the Tokai Kisen ships leave from Takeshiba terminal. If you would rather not travel by sea, you can fly from Chofu airport in around 50 minutes or take the helicopter service from Oshima.

Check-in

For the large ships Tokai Kisen updates the operating status from 9am on the day of travel, and the final decision on sailing is taken around 5pm; for the fast boats it is settled as early as 6am. If a ship sails subject to conditions, it may not berth and may continue to the next island or turn back instead.
