- Mkoani Port, Sued-Pemba
The ferry port of Mkoani is in the south of the island of Pemba, which belongs to the Zanzibar archipelago off the coast of Tanzania. From here you can reach Zanzibar and Tanga. Together the services add up to as many as 4 departures a day. Crossings take between one hour and 2 hours. The port is served by Zan Fast Ferries.
Getting there and the terminal
Mkoani is the administrative seat of the Pemba South region and has the busiest harbour on the island. Almost all ferries from Zanzibar and from the Tanzanian mainland call here, including the services from Dar es Salaam via Stone Town. The harbour takes in a quay wall and the town's fish market; Mkoani itself, with just under 24,000 inhabitants, is a manageable port town.
For onward travel into the interior of the island, the daladala are the usual means of transport, the public minibuses. They run along Pemba's main roads and are the easiest and cheapest way of getting about the island. Expect the onward journey to Chake Chake or Wete to take time: the harbour is at the southern end of the island, and the larger towns lie further north.
