- Passagierhalle Motobu (本部旅客待合所), Sakimotobu 5232, Gemeinde Motobu, Landkreis Kunigami, Okinawa
The ferry port of Motobu is in the north of Okinawa and is the interchange between the main island and the chain of the Amami Islands. From here you can reach six destinations: Kagoshima, Kametoku, Naha, Naze, Wadomari and Yoron Island. Together the services add up to as many as 12 departures a day. Crossings take between 1.75 and 22.75 hours, depending on whether you are only going as far as Naha or all the way to Kyushu. The port is served by Marue Ferry.
Getting there and the terminal
Check-in is handled in the Motobu passenger hall. It stands in the Sakimotobu district, address Sakimotobu 5232, town of Motobu in Kunigami District. If you come by car, there is a multi-storey car park at the port.
Check-in
For Motobu, Marue Ferry gives fixed counter hours rather than the usual number of minutes before departure: for Kagoshima the counter is staffed from 8:00 to 8:50, for Naha from 16:00 to 16:40. After that nobody else is accepted. If you are taking a vehicle, check-in at the island ports has to be completed at least one hour before departure, and with the vehicle registration document in hand. Ten minutes before the ship leaves the crew pulls in the gangway, and anyone still standing on the quay does not get on board. So allow yourself a buffer, especially if you plan to buy your ticket on the spot.
