Pelabuhan Tanjung Kalian, Distrikt Muntok, Bangka Barat

The ferry port of Muntok in Indonesia is the sea gateway to the island of Bangka. From here you can reach Palembang on Sumatra. Ferries leave up to 2 times a day and the crossing takes around 3 hours. The route is operated by Express Bahari.

Getting there and the terminal

The berth is not called Muntok but Tanjung Kalian, and it lies on the western tip of Bangka in the district of Muntok, Bangka Barat regency. It serves as a cargo port and a ferry port at the same time; the car ferries to Tanjung Api-Api in South Sumatra also leave from the same facility. You will recognise the headland by its lighthouse: the Dutch colonial administration had it built in the 1850s to watch over traffic through the Bangka Strait, and in 1862 it was raised to 56 metres. It is still standing today.

The fast boat to Palembang does not run every day. Express Bahari gives Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the route; departures are at 12:00 from Muntok and 7:30 from Palembang. If you are coming from the east of the island, allow for the overland journey to Muntok, because there is no second departure on the same day.
