The ferry port of Neuwerk lies on the island of the same name in the North Sea. From here you reach Cuxhaven, with up to two departures a day. The crossing takes around two hours. The port is served by Reederei Cassen Eils.
Getting there and the berth
The ship only runs from April to October, once or twice a day. The tide decides when it sails: Cassen Eils points out explicitly that the timetable depends on the state of the tide and that individual sailings can therefore take longer than two hours. For a day trip that means two things. The departure time changes from day to day, and on the usual tour you have about three hours on the island.
On the mainland the berth is at the Alte Liebe in Cuxhaven, not at the ferry port. If you are not coming by ship, you can reach Neuwerk across the mudflats at low tide: on foot with a guided mudflat walk from Sahlenburg, or by horse-drawn wadden cart. These routes depend on the tide as well.
Check-in
The operator does not quote fixed check-in times for this route. With one or two departures a day, booking online in advance is the safer option, all the more so because the return trip on the same day depends on that same sailing.
Common questions
Does the ship run all year? No. The route operates from April to October; in winter there is no ship connection to Neuwerk.
Why do the departure times keep changing? Because the fairway is tidal. Departures follow the water level, not a fixed pattern.
How long do I get on the island? On the usual day trip, around three hours. Cassen Eils also offers sailings with a longer stay.
