The ferry port of Nishinoomote is on Tanegashima in Japan, south of Kagoshima. From here you can reach Kagoshima on Kyushu as well as Miyanoura and Anbo on the neighbouring island of Yakushima. Together the services add up to as many as 19 departures a day. Crossings take between 45 minutes and 1.5 hours. The port is served by Tane Yaku Jetfoil, whose hydrofoils run under the names Toppy and Rocket.
Getting there and the terminal
The fast boat terminal stands at Nishimachi 49-1 in Nishinoomote, the island's main town, and is open from 6:00 to 17:30. From Tanegashima airport the airport bus takes 28 minutes. Access is barrier-free: a ramp, automatic doors, accessible toilets and wheelchairs to borrow are part of the fit-out, and spaces are reserved for disabled travellers and for pregnant women.
Toppy and Rocket link Kagoshima, Yakushima and Tanegashima in a triangle, so from Nishinoomote you can switch to the neighbouring island without the detour via the mainland. Three sailings a day also call at Ibusuki at the southern tip of Kyushu.
