Oma
Town port
The ferry port of Oma lies in Japan, at the northern tip of the Shimokita peninsula in Aomori Prefecture and therefore at the northernmost point of the main island of Honshu. From here you can reach Hakodate on Hokkaido. Ferries leave up to 4 times a day and the crossing takes around 1.5 hours. The port is served by Tsugarukaikyo Ferry, whose name refers to the Tsugaru Strait, the channel between the two islands.
The route is the shortest sea passage between Honshu and Hokkaido, which makes it a serious alternative to the Seikan Tunnel for travellers with their own vehicle, since the tunnel is open to rail only. How often the ferry actually sails depends on the season; the timetable further down this page is what counts.
