Fährterminal am Katsunai-Pier, Chikko 7-2, Otaru (Hokkaido)

The ferry port of Otaru is on Hokkaido in Japan. From here you can reach Niigata. A ferry leaves up to 2 times a day. The crossing takes around 16.5 hours. The port is served by Shin Nihonkai Ferry.

Getting there and the terminal

The ferry terminal is at the Katsunai Pier in the Chikko district, address Chikko 7-2. By car it is only around 1.2 kilometres from the Otaru exit of the Sapporo-Otaru expressway, which the operator reckons at about three minutes: right at the first set of lights, left at the second. Without a car you take the Hokkaido Chuo Bus on the Parte Chikko line: around 30 minutes from JR Otaru station, around ten from the closer JR Otaru-Chikko. From the same station a taxi covers the 1.8 kilometres in about ten minutes as well. At 21.30 in the evening a shuttle bus runs from the terminal back to JR Otaru station. Leaving your car at the terminal and travelling without it is not allowed.

Check-in

Shin Nihonkai Ferry expects you at the terminal at least 60 minutes before the ship leaves. During Golden Week, the summer holidays and the New Year period it is 90 minutes. Anyone arriving on the shuttle bus is not bound by these times; for them the bus departure time applies.
