The ferry port of Picton lies at the head of Queen Charlotte Sound on the north-east coast of New Zealand's South Island and is the island's gateway to the North Island. From here you reach Wellington, with a ferry leaving up to 14 times a day. The crossing over Cook Strait takes around 3.5 hours. The port is served by Bluebridge and Interislander.

Getting there and the terminal

All the berths are in the town itself, less than a kilometre from the centre. Bluebridge operates from 1 Lagoon Road; by car you turn off State Highway 1 into Kent Street and drive to the roundabout. Opposite the terminal there is a paid car park, and for foot passengers a free shuttle runs from the i-SITE and from Wellington Street. Interislander splits its handling: vehicles also go via Kent Street and Lagoon Road, with check-in just past the NPD petrol station on the right-hand side. Foot passengers instead go to the passenger terminal on Auckland Street, only a few minutes' walk from High Street and the waterfront.

Check-in

Interislander closes check-in 60 minutes before departure, both in the vehicle marshalling yard and for foot passengers. At Bluebridge it likewise ends an hour before the ship leaves. If you arrive by car, you stay with your vehicle in the yard after check-in.
