Portonovo belongs to Sanxenxo in the Galician comarca of O Salnés and is one of the departure ports for the Atlantic Islands. From here you can reach the Illa de Ons and the Cíes Islands. Together the services run up to 21 departures a day, and crossings take between 45 minutes and an hour. The port is served by Mar de Ons and Naviera Nabia.
Getting there and the terminal
Boats leave from the Muelle de pasaje, the passenger quay in Portonovo's town harbour. There is no terminal building. Naviera Nabia runs a ticket desk on the quay, staffed only on days with departures. If you plan to buy on the spot, take that into account.
Check-in
Ons and the Cíes belong to the Illas Atlánticas national park, and the number of day visitors is capped. In high season you therefore need a permit from the park authority, applied for in advance, on top of your ferry ticket. Outside the season it is not required: Naviera Nabia gives 15 September to 15 May for the Cíes, and September to May for Ons with the exception of Easter week. The operators do not state a fixed check-in deadline in minutes for Portonovo.
