The ferry port of Puttgarden is on Fehmarn in Germany, at the northern end of the island. From here you can reach Rødby. A ferry leaves up to 75 times a day. The crossing takes around 45 minutes. The port is served by Scandlines. With that frequency across the Fehmarnbelt, what matters is less the timetable than when you turn up at check-in.
Getting there and the terminal
Scandlines gives the address as Puttgarden Hafen, Fährhafenstraße, 23769 Puttgarden. Getting there could hardly be simpler, as check-in lies at the end of the E47. If you use a satnav, enter Rødby-Puttgarden Scandlines Check-in as your destination.
At the port the routes split: vehicles take the blue lane if the car is no more than six metres long, otherwise the yellow lane to be dealt with by staff. In the blue lane your number plate is scanned, or you confirm your booking at a machine, after which the barrier to your assigned lane opens. Foot passengers check in at a machine in the port terminal hall and walk from there to the gangway.
Check-in
Vehicle check-in opens two hours before the scheduled departure and closes 15 minutes beforehand, and Scandlines recommends being at the port at least 30 minutes before departure. The same 15-minute deadline applies to bicycles. Foot passengers have to be at the access bridge at the latest 15 minutes before departure. Allow time for that: it takes about five to ten minutes to walk from the terminal hall to the gangway.
