Surat Thani Train Station appears in the timetable like a port, but it is a railway station: what is sold here is a chain of bus and ferry to Koh Samui, Ko Phangan and Koh Phaluai. Together the services add up to as many as 26 departures a day. The journeys take between 4.25 and 4.75 hours. The route is served by Raja Ferry.

Getting there and the terminal

The station is not in Surat Thani but around twelve kilometres west of it in Phun Phin district, address Tha Kham. From the city you get there by taxi, tuk-tuk or the red local bus, and should allow about 40 minutes. If you arrive on the night train from Bangkok, you get off here anyway.

There is no berth attached. The ferries leave from the east coast in Don Sak district, where Raja Ferry runs its pier on Mittraphap Road. The station is registered with the operator as a pick-up point, and the bus transfer to the pier is part of the ticket. The travel agencies in the car park to the left of the station building sell the same van-and-ferry packages. Plan the day with a buffer: there are two changes between train, bus and ship, and the ferries only run until early evening.
