The ferry port of Taketomi serves the island of the same name in the Yaeyama group in the far south-west of Japan. It is served from Ishigaki, the transport hub of the archipelago: there are up to 20 sailings a day and the crossing takes around 15 minutes. The port is served by Yaeyama Kanko Ferry.
Getting there and the terminal
The berth lies outside the village. It takes about a quarter of an hour on foot to reach the historic centre with its coral walls and sandy lanes. In high season minibuses wait at the harbour, and if you book bicycle hire or a ride in a water buffalo cart you are collected from the berth free of charge.
Taketomijima Kotsu also runs a scheduled bus from the port, for which no reservation is needed. The circular bus to the village and the beaches, by contrast, has to be booked by telephone in advance, as does the guided island tour, which calls at Kaiji beach and Kondoi beach and ends back at the harbour. If you plan to spend the day on foot or by bike you need none of it: Taketomi is small enough to cover everything from the berth.
