Wellington ferry port lies at the southern tip of New Zealand's North Island. From here you cross the Cook Strait to Picton on the South Island. There are up to 14 departures a day to choose from, and the crossing takes about 3.5 hours. The port is served by Bluebridge and Interislander.
Getting there and the terminal
The two operators use separate terminals, and they are not in the same place. Bluebridge checks in at 50 Waterloo Quay in the middle of the city, directly opposite Wellington railway station. By car you leave the motorway at the Aotea Quay exit and drive past Sky Stadium; the terminal follows a good kilometre later. You can park in the Station Car Park at 83 Waterloo Quay opposite the terminal. Interislander lies further north in Kaiwharawhara: from the city, head north on Aotea Quay and turn left before the overbridge onto the Motorway North / Interislander exit. Without a car, take the free shuttle, which leaves from platform 10 at Wellington station 70 minutes before each departure and takes five minutes.
Check-in
Interislander closes check-in 60 minutes before departure, for vehicles and foot passengers alike. At Bluebridge it also ends an hour before sailing. Whichever operator you travel with, reckon on a full hour at the terminal.
