Direct crossings from Greece to Türkiye

Twenty-eight direct crossings connect Greece and Türkiye, almost all of them short hops from an eastern Aegean island to the coast opposite. Distance is rarely the problem: most take an hour or less. Two other things make this corridor harder to plan than ordinary island hopping, and both belong on the list before a ticket is booked.

Which island faces which coast

Lesbos covers the north. Mytilene to Ayvalık takes 45 to 75 minutes with Turyol, and a quieter second link runs to Dikili, the closer landing for Bergama. Chios to Çeşme is the shortest passage in the corridor and the usual way into İzmir.

Samos is the island for Ephesus. Meander Travel needs about an hour from Kuşadası, calling at Vathy on some days and Pythagorio on others, so the port matters as much as the date. A smaller service lands at Sığacık west of Seferihisar.

Further south, Kos to Bodrum is the busiest crossing of all, with Turgutreis as the alternative landing on the western tip of the peninsula; Bodrum also reaches Leros and Rhodes directly. From Rhodes the choice is roughly an hour to Marmaris or a longer run east to Fethiye.

A Schengen external border, not an island hop

An identity card is not enough in either direction. Türkiye requires a passport valid for at least 60 days beyond the intended stay, and nationalities that are not exempt apply through the official Turkish e-Visa system before travelling. The return leg is now recorded: since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System has been fully in force, registering name, travel document, fingerprints and facial image of every non-EU traveller at each external border crossing.

Turkish visitors have a route of their own. A temporary scheme issues a short-stay visa on arrival at Rhodes, Kos, Samos, Chios and Lesbos; carriers describe it as a single entry of up to seven days on the island of landing, with the file submitted through the agency well before departure. The original passport stays with the traveller.

What survives the winter

Seasonality is uneven, and it decides more itineraries than price does. Meander Travel runs Kuşadası to Samos daily from 1 April to 31 October and not outside that window, which closes the Samos door for the winter. Turyol keeps Ayvalık to Mytilene going all year but drops from daily summer sailings to a few fixed days. Yeşil Marmaris advertises sailings to the Greek islands from Marmaris, Bodrum, Turgutreis and Fethiye in all twelve months.

At the terminal

Allow an hour at the port. Tickets are exchanged for boarding cards only after passport and customs control, and the operators on the Rhodes routes set check-in accordingly. Note also that Dodekanisos Seaways, which carries most Dodecanese traffic, serves Greek ports only, so the Turkish leg is always a separate ticket from a separate carrier.
