Akita ferry port lies on the north-west coast of Honshu and is an intermediate stop on the coastal line that links the Japanese mainland with Hokkaido. From here you can reach three destinations: Niigata to the south in 6.5 hours, Tomakomai Higashi on Hokkaido in 10.5 hours and Tsuruga far to the south-west in 19.5 hours. Together the services run up to 6 departures a day. The port is served by Shin Nihonkai Ferry.
Getting there and the terminal
Akita Ferry Terminal stands at the Nakajima pier in the northern district of Tsuchizaki, address Tsuchizakiminato-nishi 1-13-13. By car it is around 8 kilometres or about 15 minutes from the Akita-kita motorway exit, and about 18 kilometres and 30 minutes from Akita-minami. Without a car you take the connecting bus from JR Akita station, which needs around 30 minutes to the terminal.
Check-in
Shin Nihonkai Ferry requires you to have completed check-in 60 minutes before departure. During Golden Week, the summer holidays and around the New Year the operator brings the deadline forward to 90 minutes. If you arrive on the connecting bus, a separate assembly time applies.
